What to Do if you Run Out of Formula during Quarantine

The Coronavirus Pandemic is causing a lot of panic across the World. Causing a lot of people to stock pile on essential items. I have gone into stores multiple times to discover that they have ran out of formula. So what do you do if you run out of formula?

I find this to be a scary topic. One of a mother’s biggest fears is not being able to feed her baby and provide her baby with the things baby needs.

I’m here to tell you don’t panic, you do have other options. Your baby DOES NOT have to go without.

What to do if you run out of formula during quarantine

Call your Pediatrician

The very first thing you want to do is call your pediatrician office. Because they are considered essential, there’s a strong possibility that your baby’s office will be open.

Pediatricians often have formula and formula samples and during this pandemic I am sure your pediatrician will not have a problem with giving you formula for free to get through this tough time.

Call your Local WIC Office

This can be a hit or miss and depends on where you are located. My local WIC office is currently closed all and of their workers are working from home.

If your office is open there’s a strong possibility that they will also have formula to give you. Even if they aren’t open, they would be worth calling because someone could possibly point you in the right direction in finding some.

If you Run out of Formula and your Baby is 9 Months or Older

Whole Milk

If you run out of formula and your baby is over 9 months, it is okay to give your baby whole milk. It is often advised not to by pediatricians even though your baby stomach can handle it because of it’s lack of Iron.

Babies need 11 mg of Iron a day. You can supplement the iron missing from whole milk with either an iron supplement mixed into your baby by:

  • Baby cereal mixed into bottles
  • Iron supplement powdered into bottles
  • Iron rich foods

Baby-Led Weaning

Speaking of Iron rich foods, if you haven’t started solids already, now would be a great time to start. I have a lot of information available on how to start your baby on solids and on Baby Led Weaning. I’ll leave a few links below.
